“Sass wake up and get the fuck out of this taxi. He is driving you to a second location. You are going to be raped and murdered tonight.”
Sassy jumped out at the next traffic light.
In the fifteen seconds between waking up and jumping out, you know that Sassy had to muster the courage to do just that. Jump out. She did.
Sarah Jayne Dennis’ utterly efficacious first novel, Keep it. Yeah! I know. is a love letter for the World. Introspective Sassy is a master at moving the chess pieces of life eight steps ahead, although at first, second, and third glances it does not seem so. She is slightly behind on the life milestones that pepper one’s life in their late twenties and early thirties in Brisbane. It is right to believe that willing the Universe to ruin you is a fool’s errand, especially when you are swinging punches for Sassy in the energy-holes set for her by her adversaries that overwhelm her. However, there is a hope and a sensitivity to Sassy that will leave you with the sense that she is destined for more than an ordinary life. The solemn fighting spirit which keeps her standing will never leave you questioning who is and was the heavyweight champion all along. That is to say, Sassy has a genius residing within her that knows what will really be in the end, despite the dominant narrative of today that she is losing.
